The first mention of Naxos dates back to the 8th century BC. It was one of the major centres of the Cycladic culture and later was taken by the Romans in 41 BC, Under the Byzantine Empire, Naxos was part of the thema (region) of the Aegean Sea, which was established in the mid-9th century. In the aftermath of the Fourth Crusade, the Venetian Marco Sanudo conquered the island. The Venetians ruled Naxos from 1207 until it fell to the Turks in 1566. The influence of Venetian architecture is obvious in Hora's Castle, some handsome mansions in Hora, and many of the towers that punctuate the hillsides.
